Software library simplifies development of safe drives

In the development of safe drives, the effort required to implement the safety functions is considerable. MESCO Systems has combined many of these functions in a universally applicable software library. This significantly reduces development costs and time.

Standard module for safe drive functions

In the development of safe drives, a considerable part of the effort is spent on implementing the safety functions. MESCO Systems has combined many of these functions in a software library. It can be used universally and thus enables the drive manufacturer to significantly reduce his development costs and shorten development times.

Getting started with the development of safety-related drives can present project participants with major challenges. In addition to the usual cost and deadline pressures, extensive normative requirements must be met throughout the entire product life cycle.

For the safe drive functions, the relevant requirements are derived from IEC 61800-5-2. In the current version, this product standard defines 17 safety functions that can be used for risk reduction during motion processes. A large proportion of these functions can be fully mapped in the software.

The most important safety functions

Until now, drive manufacturers were forced to program these functions independently or have them created by specialized development service providers. Cross-manufacturer standard modules were not available until now. MESCO has now combined the most important safety functions in a software library to close this gap.

The basic version of the library contains the eleven most common safety functions according to IEC 61800-5-2. Further safety functions will be successively integrated into the library so that the drive manufacturer himself can also retrofit them by means of firmware updates.

The library is provided as source code and is optimized for use on 32-bit microcontrollers.

“By using the library, the manufacturer saves a lot of time and money in development, and minimizes his risk,” emphasizes Peter Bernhardt, Head of Marketing & Sales.

The library can be used up to SIL 3 according to IEC 61508 / IEC 62061 and Performance Level e according to ISO 13849.

Safety competence for industrial automation

MESCO offers the library as part of a complete package that includes not only the software but also a detailed integration manual and technical support. In addition, MESCO Engineering supports the customer on request with hardware and software development services, from concept to certification.
