With sound expertise in functional safety, we are now supporting the establishment of the BiSS Safety protocol certified by TÜV Rheinland in control technology, thus enabling the development of BiSS Safety systems with a safety requirement level up to SIL3.
What exactly can BiSS Safety do?
BiSS Safety follows the trend of purely digital communication with functional safety in mind. It is fully mappable with the BiSS protocol and uses the same physical interface for easy integration of existing BiSS sensors and BiSS controllers into a BiSS Safety system.
Two independent position words are transmitted via the “Black Channel“: the “Control Position Word” with high resolution for accurate control of the system and the “Safety Position Word” for monitoring the requirements defined in DIN EN 61784-3.
The statements on the cooperation between MESCO and BiSS
According to Dr. Heiner Flocke – Chairman of the Board of the user association BiSS Association e.V. and Managing Director of iC-Haus GmbH, two factors are decisive for the success and spread of the BiSS interface: its technical advantages with unique selling points and the open source licensing.
“It was a logical step to place the organization and design in the hands of the BiSS Association and thus the users, who will once again present their BiSS products on a joint stand at the SPS in Nuremberg. MESCO is an important service provider also within this group and can significantly advance the dissemination of the BiSS interface, especially in safety systems,” says Flocke.
Thomas Best, Managing Director of MESCO Engineering GmbH affirms: “For MESCO, joining the BiSS Association is an important building block to offer up-to-date services in the field of hardware and software development for drive technology and encoder manufacturers. We implement integrated functional safety solutions, as well as option boards or encoder interfaces up to the product certificate. With BiSS Safety we can realize some new innovative customer projects.”
In addition to iC-Haus, several IC, FPGA or IP providers now offer highly integrated devices and firmware for automation and drive technology, among others. BiSS Line as a physical layer offers unique selling points in single-cable technology as open source and with Forward Error Correction (FEC) also for multi-slave systems.
