The IO-Link communication standard is becoming increasingly established in the automation industry. In the future, sensors and actuators for applications in the area of functional safety will also be based on IO-Link communication: the ‘IO-Link Safety’ specification was released and published for this purpose in the summer.
Like IO-Link itself, IO-Link Safety should also be easy to integrate. In addition, compatibility with IO-Link and OSSDE-based systems is to be enabled. The technology remains fieldbus and system independent. This is achieved by implementing safety standards such as FSoE or PROFIsafe in the IO-Link Safety Master. For the integration of IO-Link Safety into a new fieldbus system, the IO-Link Safety Master must therefore be adapted – the IO-Link Safety Devices remain uniform and can be used unchanged. For more complex sensors or actuators, for which safety-oriented “Dedicated Safety Tools” are required for parameterization, IO-Link Safety also provides a standardized software interface.
In order to support device manufacturers efficiently in the development of their IO-Link safety masters and devices in the future, MESCO has developed its own IO-Link safety development boards. These serve as a basis for the development of IO-Link safety masters and device stacks in the development phase and should enable faster and more cost-effective development of own devices in the future.
